ISO 9001 vs. AS9100: What They Mean When You're Choosing a Machine Shop
Quality-system acronyms show up on every machine shop's website, but buyers are often left guessing what they actually guarantee. ISO 9001 and AS9100 are the two you will encounter most when sourcing machined parts. This is an educational look at what each standard covers, how they differ, and — more importantly — what questions to ask a shop regardless of which logo is on its homepage.
What ISO 9001 covers
ISO 9001 is the international baseline for quality management systems, applicable to any industry. A shop operating to ISO 9001 has defined, documented, and audited processes for:
- Document and record control — drawings, revisions, and work instructions are controlled so the shop machines the right revision.
- Nonconformance and corrective action — defects are recorded, dispositioned, and root-caused rather than quietly reworked.
- Calibration and measurement traceability — inspection equipment is calibrated on schedule against traceable standards.
- Supplier control — outside processes (heat treat, plating, material supply) are evaluated and monitored.
- Management review and continual improvement — quality data is reviewed and acted on, not filed.
For most machined-part buyers — industrial, automotive support, medical devices at the component level, general engineering — a well-run ISO 9001 system covers what matters: repeatability, traceability, and disciplined handling of problems.
What AS9100 adds
AS9100 contains the full text of ISO 9001 and layers aviation, space, and defense requirements on top. The significant additions include:
- Risk management across operations and the supply chain, formalized beyond ISO 9001's risk-based thinking.
- Configuration management — rigorous control of exactly which revision, process route, and materials produced each serial number.
- Counterfeit-part and product-safety controls — provenance of raw material and purchased items is verified.
- First article inspection expectations aligned with AS9102 reporting.
- Stricter traceability — lot and serial traceability from raw material certs through final acceptance.
AS9100 exists because a fastener in an airframe carries different consequences than one in a conveyor. Aerospace primes and many defense contracts flow down AS9100 (or equivalent controls) as a hard requirement — if your purchase order carries that flowdown, the standard decides for you.

What the paperwork does not tell you
A certificate — or a compliant system — describes process discipline, not machining capability. Two shops with identical quality systems can differ enormously in the tolerances they hold and the evidence they provide. The questions below separate them faster than any logo:
- "Show me a recent first article report for a part like mine." The format and depth tell you how inspection really runs.
- "How do you verify tight tolerances, and on what equipment?" Look for CMM-based, documented answers with calibration traceability.
- "How is material traceability handled?" Certs should link to your job, not to a shelf.
- "What happens when a part is out of spec?" A confident description of the nonconformance process is a green flag; hedging is not.
- "What flows down to your suppliers?" Your requirements are only as strong as the weakest outside process.
Also match the requirement to the job: demanding AS9100 for a non-aerospace fixture narrows your supplier pool and raises cost without adding protection, while skipping required flowdowns on aerospace work creates compliance risk you will inherit later.
